Over 300 life convicts in the Vellore Central Prison for Men on Monday observed a fast after none of them were released during the customary release of convicts on grounds of good conduct every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of Anna.
Sources in the prison said that a total of 312 life convicts were undergoing imprisonment at the Vellore Central Prison. They informed the prison administration in the early hours of Monday that they would stage a hunger strike demanding that the State government and prison department restore the practice of releasing life convicts on the occasion of Anna’s birth anniversary based on their good conduct during their imprisonment period.
They refused to have breakfast served to them around 7 am. However, Superintendent of the prison, N Arivudainambe, rushed to the prison and had a meeting with the life convicts. The officer reportedly admonished the convicts stating that it was only government that could take a decision in the issue.
He pacified the agitated convicts and asked them to submit their demands in writing and assured them that he would bring the issue to the notice of the senior officials. Following this, the inmates withdrew their protest and had breakfast around 8 am, sources further added.
