BANGALORE: The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) razed over 50 unauthorised shops in the Vishwabharathi House Building Cooperative Society Layout amidst protests and lathi charge on Monday. The BDA started the demolition drive at around 9.00 am. The shop owners claimed that BDA had not issued notices to them before undertaking the demolition. According to the rules, the BDA should issue notices three days before the demolition, they said. The shop owners and some residents of the area protested and tried to prevent the BDA officials from demolishing their shops and this forced the police, who had come to assist the BDA officials in the demolition drive, to intervene. The police had to lathi charge to disperse the mob. One of the protesters was injured in the eye during the lathi charge. Many shop owners were seen wailing over the goods that were lost or damaged during the demolition drive. However, the BDA did not touch the buildings of the owners who had obtained stay orders from the court against the demolition.
