Srinagar: The construction of a footbridge over River Kishenganga by the Indian Army was brought to an abrupt halt when Pakistani soldiers objected to the work.
"The footbridge was being laid over the river in the Teethwal sector of Tangdhar area to enable the people from across the LoC to enter Jammu and Kashmir to get relief material," said Defence Spokesman Lt. Col. VK Batra.
The objections came even as India and Pakistan get ready to meet in Islamabad on Saturday for discussions on facilitating cooperation between the two countries.
The meeting will focus on the proposals made by both countries to open centres along the LoC to provide relief to the victims of the October 8 earthquake.
Lt. Col. Batra said that Pakistani soldiers forced their Indian counterparts to stop work on the footbridge, which was in the initial stages of completion.
The Pakistani soldiers asked their Indian counterparts not to go ahead with the construction as the official clearance was yet to be received.
The Indian soldiers immediately complied with their demand, he added.
Teethwal is among the three points identified by India for the divided families to meet each other and receive relief.
The other two points are Aman Setu (aka Kaman Post) in Uri and Chakan Da Bagh in Poonch sectors.
Pakistan had proposed five meeting points along the LoC for the divided families to give assistance to their relatives affected by the October 8 quake that killed thousands of people and rendered millions homeless on both sides of the LoC.
