New Delhi: Indian chess prodigy Parmarjan Negi won the third and final Grandmaster norm at the Chelyabinsk Region Super final GM tournament in Russia on Saturday to become the second youngest ever in the world to win the title.
Negi achieved the feat at the age of 13 years, four months and 20 days to break the record of Norway's Magnus Carlsen, who had achieved the feat in 2004 at the age of 13 years, four months and 26 days.
Negi, the 15th Indian to reach the milestone, is the youngest Grandmaster in the world after Sergei Karjakin of Ukraine, who holds the record of being the youngest ever GM at the age of 12 years and seven months.
He also toppled the record of former world junior champion P Harikrishna, who was the youngest ever Indian to become a Grandmaster at the age of 15.
Negi, who entered into the tournament with the ELO rating of 2445, won six out of nine points which was enough to win him the honour and to take his rating above 2500, also a requirement for the title.
Negi's first norm came during the Hastings International Chess Congress in December-January when he was a 12-year-old.
Immediately after, he clinched the second GM norm at the 4th edition of Parsvnath International Open Chess Tournament in the capital city.
J B Negi, father of Parimarjan, was ecstatic about his son's achievement.
"It is really a great news for all of us and moreover, it is a record for our country," he said.
