PM to meet Left over Mulford
The Left has asked UPA not to vote against Iran at the IAEA meet on Thursday and are also demanding Mulford's recall.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is meeting Left leaders on Tuesday evening to discuss India's vote on Iran's nuclear programme as well as US Ambassador David Mulford's statement linking the vote to the nuclear deal between Delhi and Washington.

The Left parties have asked the government not to vote against Iran at the International Atomic Eenergy Agency (IAEA) meet on Thursday. They are also demanding Mulford's recall.

Mulford, who is at the centre of a controversy over his remarks on the nuclear deal with India, on Tuesday stated that Washington and New Delhi had entered a new era of relationship and defence cooperation that would help improve regional and global security and stability.

Visiting the American exhibits at the Defence Expo-2006 that opened here in New Delhi on Tuesday morning, Mulford described the defence ties between India and the US as a strategic partnership.

"Our defence cooperation enhances both of our nations' capabilities," he said.

Mulford has been criticised for stating that the Indo-US nuclear deal depended on how India would vote at the IAEA meet and that if India did not oppose Iran's programme, the deal could be off.
