New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the ambitious 'Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana' aimed to ensure holistic development of identified gram panchayats on Saturday (October 11), the birth anniversary of socialist stalwart Jay Prakash Narayan.
PM had announced the scheme during his address on Independence Day from the ramparts of the Red Fort.
The idea of this scheme is to ensure a holistic development of identified Gram Panchayats that substantially improves the quality of life of all sections of the population. The main features of the SAGY which has been drafted by the Ministry of rural development are:
- Each Member of Parliament should make one village and turn it into a model village by 2016, two more villages by 2019 and after 2019 each MP must develop 5 model villages during their tenure (one per year) in his/her area till 2024.
- MPs from urban areas should adopt villages from nearby rural constituencies.
- SAGY aims at turning villages into model villages not just through infrastructure development but gender equality, dignity of women, social justice, community service, cleanliness, eco-friendliness, peace and harmony.
- Mutual-cooperation, self reliance, local self-government, transparency and accountability in public life will also be expected as part of this turnaround.
- There will be a systematic environment creation and social mobilization, which will be led and guided by the MP him/herself.
- A village development plan to be prepared for every identified gram panchayat with special focus on empowering every poor household to come out of poverty.
- Planning process in every Gram Panchayat will be a participatory exercise coordinated by the District Collector. The Gram Panchayat also would be fully involved in this process.
