New Delhi: Delhi Police finally received the post mortem report of Shanno, the schoolgirl who died after being allegedly meted out corporal punishment, on Thursday which hinted at epilepsy as a possible reason for her death.
A senior police official said with the post mortem report in their hand, investigators would now try to tally it with the claims made by the girl's family and classmates in connection with the case.
Shanno died on April 17 in a city hospital after she was made to stand in the sun with bricks on her shoulders allegedly by her teacher Manju.
The official said they received the post mortem report this afternoon which said the girl suffered "no external injury and it hinted at epileptic problem as a possible reason for her death."
He said the police have been told to wait for detailed chemical and viscera report of the girl as well.
Police were under pressure to arrest the teacher but "lack of credible evidence" had prevented them from doing so, the official said.
The investigators also recorded the statements of her family members and students.
Initial medical reports suggested that Shanno died due to respiratory problems and a delay in treatment might had aggravated the medical condition of the girl. The reports also suggested that she had a previous history of epilepsy.
The official said the girl received medical attention late as her family had allegedly taken her to a 'maulavi' first and to a hospital later only.
Meanwhile the family members of girl, her parents continued to protest against what they termed as the "lackadaisical" attitude of the police.
"We still don't know why the teacher has not been arrested," the family said.
The MCD primary teachers, who have formed an action committee, fully came out in support of the accused teacher and claimed that no corporal punishment was given to the child.
"The child had previous history of epilepsy, about which the parents did not inform the school. The day she fell ill, the parents wasted valuable time by taking her to maulvi.
"The teacher has been suspended for no fault of hers. She did not inflict any punishment on the child," Ramchandra Dabas, general secretary of Nigam Prathmik Shikshak Sangrash Samiti said.
He said the teachers will gherao the MCD headquarters in Town Hall on April 28.
