Mumbai: All-rounder Ramesh Powar will join the Indian squad for the ongoing One-Day series in Pakistan as cover for the injured Harbhajan Singh, it was announced on Tuesday.
Known more for his lusty hitting these days, his right-arm off-break has proved to be more than just a handful on the domestic scene.
In his seven-year-long first-class career, Powar has scored 2471 runs at an average of 32.94. And his off-breaks have fethced him 246 wickets at less than 26 apiece. So not surprisingly, he is confident of a good showing in Pakistan.
And if things do fall in place for the gutsy Mumbai lad, he might well be part of the squad for the second ODI at Rawalpindi on Saturday.
Indian cricket board secretary Niranjan Shah said the team management had asked for Powar as off-spinner Harbhajan was recovering from a finger injury.
The 27-year-old all-rounder was to join the squad on Wednesday as the 16th member, Shah said in a statement.
Powar, an off-spinner and a useful lower-order batsman, has played just two One-Day internationals, both on India's last tour of Pakistan in 2004.
Harbhajan was forced to miss the opening One-Dayer at Peshwawar on Monday due to the injury sustained during a practice session before the match.
Pakistan lead 1-0 in the five-match series after winning at Peshawar.
