Bangalore: A fast track court will on Monday hear the explanation of prime accused Shiva Kumar in Pratibha Srikanthmurthy's rape case. Pratibha, a BPO, employee was allegedly raped and murdered by the cab driver in 2005. Pratibha's mother Gowramma still awaits justice five years after she lost her only daughter. Pratibha was an employee of HP's BPO operations and her death had sent shock waves across the city.
Ever since her daughter's murder in December 2005, Gowramma has been fighting a lone battle. She's attended every court hearing, sat through lawyers' arguments and police questioning, and waited with hope for just one thing - a death penalty for Shiva Kumar, the cab driver who's accused of killing Pratibha Srikanthmurthy. Her murder had shocked IT city.
At CNN-IBN, Prathibha's case touches a special chord because her murder came to light the same day our channel was launched. And we started a campaign for justice for Prathibha and for many Prathibhas in the BPO industry, on Monday, four and a half years later, we hope we're somewhere near attaining that.
Police say they have a watertight case. “There was kidnapping, rape, murder,” said Alok Kumar, Joint commissioner (Crime).
For Gowramma though, little will change. She lost her husband 15 days after Prathibha was born and struggled as a single mother to bring up her only child. Her home is filled with memories and a void.
“I have everything, but I have nothing… I'm staying alone here… it's very difficult to live without my daughter…I loved her so much… every day, every night I'm crying… I don't sleep at all…” said Gowramma.
It's the first time the grieving mother is talking to a television channel. And she told us that she is determined to continue her fight.
“As a mother I'm fighting. She's my daughter… I have to give importance… to get justice for her soul.”
