New Delhi: Police on Thursday began investigation into the killing of DIG Jaswinder Singh, who was allegedly by one of his two PSOs. The two are facing charges of murder and have been remanded to police custody.
A team of crime branch officers who went to Koraput to probe Singh's death, is examing whether it was a case of accidental firing by the PSOs or if there was any other motive involved, official sources said. Inspector General of Police (crime branch) B K Sharma will monitor the investigation.
The sources said the cell phone of the PSO Seshananda Sarangi, accused in the firing had been seized by the police. It was said that he had made calls from it after the shooting.
Director General of Police Amarananda Pattanayak had said on Tuesday that the 9 mm pistol of one of the two PSOs accompanying the DIG had gone off "accidentally" killing the officer.
The two PSOs had apparently panicked and fired at the windscreen of the vehicle from outside to cook up a story that they had been ambushed on the way by naxalites, he said.
A case had been registered against the duo on the complaint made by the driver of the vehicle Chandra Sekhar Behera who claimed that the DIG had been killed in the firing from the PSO's firearm.
The two arrested PSOs were produced before a court at Lakshmipur on Wednesday before being remanded to police custody. They were kept at the jail at Koraput.
Meanwhile, S K Nath, who was promoted to the rank of DIG from superintendent of police and posted as DIG of police (South Western Range), Sunabeda, in place of Singh, has proceeded on leave, the sources said.
