Bhopal: Forty-eight days after Prof Sabharwal's death outside Madhav College in Ujjain, the CID has filed a chargesheet against the six accused. The CID's chargesheet, filed on Friday, carried a reconstruction of the events leading to the professor's death. The information is based on eight eyewitness accounts, including that of two policemen.
On August 26, Professor Sabharwal had opposed the student council elections in a faculty meeting, which was endorsed by the rest of the staff. Even before the meeting could end, a faculty member called up ABVP leader Vimal Tomar to inform him of the decision.
As soon as the news spread, NSUI activists barged into the campus and vandalised the principal's room and canteen. They were later thrown out by the police.
A short while later, ABVP activists entered the campus. One of them had an altercation with Professor Nath, who blamed the decision on Professor Sabharwal. As Professor Sabharwal came out, the ABVP activists - among them Pankaj Mishra, Vimal Tomar, Shashi Ranjan Akela and Vishal Rajouri - stopped him from going out of the campus. After confirming his identity, the AVBP men attack the principal and he collapsed near Gate No 2.
The CID claims, through the eyewitness accounts, it has been able to identify the role of each of the six accused in the case.
"We had 90 days to file the chargesheet. But we have done it before time," K Vyas, the investigating officer in the case, said.
Professor Sabharwal's son is, however, not satisfied with the investigations. "This is all an eyewash," Himanshu Sabharwal claims.
Meanwhile, the CID has kept the option of arresting more people in the case by keeping the option of filing a supplementary chargesheet.
