“Until you dig a hole, you plant a tree, you water it and make it survive, you haven’t done a thing. You are just talking” — Wangari Maathai (late Kenyan political activist)
Trees have been there since time immemorial. As a means of human survival, they play an invaluable role. From providing clean air by absorbing carbon dioxide, sheltering us from the scorching sun, and offering fruits and medicine — trees have benefitted us in multiple ways. What’s more, they even act as caretakers for our mental well-being.
According to research by a The Nature Conservancy scientist, spending time in nature can decrease anxiety and depression. But are we making sure that the trees are being taken care of properly? Tree care and maintenance are essential for the sustainability, health, and longevity of trees and human civilisation simultaneously.
As part of News18 Network’s ‘Project One Tree’, a movement aiming to mobilize every Indian to plant a tree as a measure against climate change, here are a few tips you can follow to take care of trees:
Watering
Watering is a vital factor when it comes to taking care of newly planted trees. Regularly watering trees is crucial to the development of resilient root systems leading to their long-lasting life. But make sure you do not overwater them as it can do more harm than good. Watering should always be conducted in appropriate quantities.
Mulch and Soil Management
Mulching is critical to the health of trees. A freshly planted tree will benefit from having a thick layer of mulch applied around it to promote growth. Mulch not only keeps weeds at bay but also acts as a cooling layer to keep the ground moist, hence acting as a shield from the sun. Mulch is an essential component of a healthy root system because roots prefer cool and moist environments.
Staking and Guying
For trees with shallow root systems or crooked stems, guying and staking can be helpful. The process also caters to trees that have bent due to storms or poise as a restorative procedure to sustain trees that have been damaged by strong winds.
Fertilisers
Nutrients are necessary for trees to grow and remain healthy. It’s necessary to fertilise your trees frequently if you stay in a place with poor soil. In such cases, you can either create your own compost or use commercial fertiliser. Be sure to read the instructions mentioned on the fertiliser package because applying too much of it can harm your trees.
Pruning
One of the most crucial things you can do for maintaining trees is pruning. By trimming branches that are developing in an unfavourable direction or branches that are dead or infected, trees grow healthier. Pruning should be done in late winter or early spring before the tree starts growing.
Monitor Trees For Diseases
If tree diseases are not treated on time, they can spread swiftly and damage them. It is essential to keep an eye out for any indications of tree diseases. Get in touch with an ISA-Certified Arborist if you observe anything strange, such as discoloured leaves or branches.
Tree Trunk Protection
For a tree to remain healthy, its trunk needs to be protected from lawnmowers, weed eaters, and bumps. Trees can be protected by wrapping the trunk or by butting a barrier that restricts grass growth.
Frost And Cold protection
Trees with thin bark and fruit-bearing trees are susceptible to freezing damage. The term, which is often used to refer to frost cracking or sunscald, describes the rapid temperature variations that lead to the death of bark cells. To shield the trunk, wrap it with protective tree wrap or a plastic tree guard. New trees can be covered with tarps, burlap, or sheets.
Safe Root Systems
Leaf scorch, stunted or halted growth, and fungus development at the base are some signs of root infections in trees. Trees that have a weak root structure are more likely to collapse in stormy or windy weather. Starting with ideal soil conditions that are well-conditioned with plenty of water and oxygen will help control and prevent root diseases. To reduce the issues, trees must have sufficient spacing.
Spreading Awareness
Perhaps one of the most important factors of tree health is to spread awareness about the significance of trees and the adverse effects that could result if they are not maintained properly. Talk with your friends, family members, and close ones, or start a campaign on tree care by creating banners or posters and circulating them in your neighbourhood.
