Ahmedabad: Torrential rains have pounded Rajkot in Gujarat and turned the city resembled a huge water body. So far 50,000 people have been evacuated to safer areas while 12 people have died due to floods in the state.

Rajkot received more than 15 inches of rain on Thursday night. Trikon Bagh, Jangleshwar, Chunarwad, Raiyadhar Road ares of Rajkot have seen massive water logging following the rains.

Due to low pressure in the Arabian Sea heavy rain have pounded the Saurashtra region of Gujarat. Heavy downpour has also wreaked havoc in other cities and areas of Gujarat including Ahmedabad, Junagarh, Porbandar, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar, Kutch and Amrohi district in the last 36 hours.

The state administration has issued an alert to the coastal villages and asked fishermen not to venture into the sea. Schools and colleges have remained closed in the affected areas. Road and rail traffic has been hit in the state.

NDRF has been called in to help in the rescue and relief operations in flood-hit areas. Due to heavy torrential rains many dams in the state have also been overflowing.
