The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday confirmed that heatwave conditions have abated throughout the country and monsoon rains are set to cover almost all of North and Northwest India over the next two to three days, with temperatures likely to fall by 3-5°C after 24 hours in the region. The latest weather forecast by IMD stated that monsoon had arrived in Punjab today.
“Southwest Monsoon further advanced into remaining parts of North Arabian Sea, Gujarat State; some more parts of Rajasthan, most parts of Madhya Pradesh; some more parts of West Uttar Pradesh; Bihar, some parts of East Uttar Pradesh; most parts of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, some parts of Punjab today on 27th June 2024,” the IMD said.
The IMD added that the Southwest monsoon is expected to further advance into Delhi, Chandigarh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu during the next couple of days. “Conditions are likely to become favourable for further advance of southwest Monsoon into some more parts of Rajasthan; remaining parts of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, some more parts of Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Chandigarh and some parts of Haryana, some more parts of Punjab, remaining parts of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu during next 2-3 days,” the IMD forecast said on Thursday.
The national capital, which witnessed heavy rains on Thursday morning, may be set for a rainy weekend as the weather department has predicted heavy rainfall in Delhi NCR on June 29 and 30. The IMD said isolated heavy rainfall is very likely over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, East Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana during next 5 days; West Rajasthan on June 27, 28 and July 1, East Madhya Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal during June 28-30, Chhattisgarh, Odisha during June 27-30 and Vidarbha on June 27, Bihar during June 27-July 1, Jharkhand during June 29-July 1.
The IMD has also warned of isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Coastal Karnataka today. Isolated very heavy rainfall is also very likely over Konkan and Goa during June 27-July 1, Coastal Karnataka, Saurashtra and Kutch on June 27 and 28, South Interior Karnataka, Kerala and Mahe, north Coastal Andhra Pradesh and West Madhya Pradesh on June 27.
