BHADRAK: Five days after the flood, victims here claimed to have received relief on Wednesday. The victims from villages like Kantika, Sanlipur, Maudapur, Raipur and 20 other villages of Dhamnagar block alleged that no official distributed relief of any kind in the area in the last five days. They further alleged that even as official releases stated that cooked food was being served in marooned villages, not even drinking water was supplied to them. The State Government’s idea of stocking rice in inaccessible panchayat godowns also did not convince as most of the godowns were submerged, damaging the grains.Sources said 4,42,066 people in 443 villages under 94 panchayats in six blocks of the district were affected in the recent flood. While 11 persons were killed, crops in over 20,000 hectares have been damaged.Collector Akshay Kumar Pani rubbished the allegations. Admitting that relief was distributed three days after flood, he said there might have been a communication gap. “As the roads were cut off it was difficult to reach out to the people even in boats. Our first priority was to rescue people,” he said. The official added that relief distribution began on Wednesday.
