Sandeep Singh eyes return to national team
Sandeep Singh said he is eyeing a return to the national team through the Hockey India League which begins on January 14.

Mumbai: Out-of-favour Indian drag-flicker Sandeep Singh Wednesday said he is eyeing a return to the national team through the IPL-style Hockey India League which begins on January 14.

"I want to perform well, because this is a good platform for me to return to the Indian side," Sandeep, who will play for Mumbai Magicians, told reporters here. Following India's disastrous London Olympics campaign, the penalty corner specialist was ousted from the national team.

Sandeep said he would not like to comment on coach Michael Nobbs' statement that the non-performing seniors would find it difficult to make a comeback to the national side. "I don't want to comment. I will try to perform well and get back into the side," he said.

With questions raised on his defense, the Haryana lad said, "I don't care about what people say. But I will try to be different on field and perform." Singh said the Mumbai franchise has a good mix of foreign players.

"The team is good. The coach (Ric Charlesworth) is one of the best in the world. There are Australians, Pakistanis, Malaysians and young Indian players. It is a good combination of Australians and Indians. Let us see what happens," he said.

"Currently there are six captains from different countries. We have 53 Olympians and others are international players. Currently the level is quite high, compared to the other leagues. You will find this (format) different," he added.
