He had been hospitalised due extreme pain in his chest and was coughing blood.

Moscow: Russian doctors who operated upon a 'cancer patient' were stunned when they stumbled upon the tumour which was actually a five centimetre high growing spruce plant in his lung.

According to popular tabloid Komsomolskaya Gazeta Artyom Sidorkin a 28-year old resident of Izhevsk city in the Udmurtia region was hospitalised due extreme pain in his chest and coughing up blood.

Doctors had suspected cancer and had decided to operate on his lung. The surgeons were dumbfounded on seeing a five-centimetre high spruce tree sapling growing inside his lung.

"I blinked three times and thought I was seeing things," Izhevsk surgeon Vladimir Kamashev was quoted as saying by the daily.

The spruce, which was touching the man's lung capillaries and causing severe chest pain, was successfully removed, by the surgeon.

Medics believe that Sidorkin could have breathed in a seed, which later sprouted inside his lung and started to grow.

"It was very painful. But to be honest I did not feel any foreign object inside me," the patient told 'Komsomolskaya Pravda'.
