Scams have tainted defence forces: Army chief
Army Chief General VK Singh says the internal health of forces is very important.

New Delhi: India Army Chief General VK Singh on Friday admitted that the image of defence forces had suffered due to the recent spate of scams allegedly involving senior officials.

"Internal health is important. A few people have tainted the image of this force," General Singh said in New Delhi, referring to the scams allegedly involving Army officers.

Singh made the statement even as Union Environment Ministry is preparing to make report of the controversial Adarsh Cooperative Housing Society public.

The posh society in Mumbai's Colaba area has already been served a show-cause notice asking as to why the 31-floor structure should not be demolished under Section 5 of the Environment Protection Act 1986 for alleged environmental violations. The project had not got necessary coastal regulation zone clearance.

General Singh also said that he was not aware of any plans by the Central Government to reduce troops in Kashmir Valley.

"We are not yet aware of what plan they have made for this so called reduction. I am quite sure that this will be done in consultation because there is a unified headquarters that functions in Jammu and Kashmir. So it will be those people who will be taken out, who are probably considered dispensable in the present security situation," the Army Chief said.
