New Delhi: Armed security personnel on Wednesday manned Delhi's streets, keeping a hawk-eyed vigil to pre-empt any possible terrorist strike on Independence Day.

An elaborate ground-to-air security apparatus was put in place in the city, especially near Red Fort where Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will hoist the tri-colour.

Manmohan Singh will be hoisting the national flag at Red fort at 7:15 am. The celebrations will also be carried out in all states and union territories. State Chief Ministers will be unfurling the tricolour in their respective capitals.

President Pranab Mukherjee set the tone for Independence Day in his maiden address to the nation on Tuesday night. In his speech he sent out a veiled but strong message to Yoga Guru Ramdev and Anna Hazare, saying anti-corruption protests cannot be held at the cost of undermining democratic institutions.

Meanwhile, the Home Ministry issued a high alert for all states following intelligence reports that Maoists and Pakistan-based terror groups may try to disrupt peace. Regular checking is being done at all sensitive locations, especially in parts of the North East, Jammu and Kashmir and the national capital.

The Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from Rajouri district on Tuesday.

Several insurgent groups in the North East have called for the boycott of the Independence Day functions.

Recently security forces had unearthed a secret tunnel along the India-Pakistan international border in Jammu region. In addition to this, three incidents of ceasefire violations from Pakistan without any provocation were also reported within a week at Arnia, Hiranagar and Ramgarh sectors of the state. The restive region has witnessed numerous militant attacks, insurgency, and infiltration attempts from across the border in the last two decades.
