Days after the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) revoked senior IPS officer Umesh Kumar’s suspension, the state government on Monday issued orders reinstating him with immediate effect.
Kumar will be joining back as the chairman of Godavari Valley Development Authority. The MHA, in its order dated August 30, had said that Kumar’s suspension on the grounds of “taking unauthorised leave” was not justified and untenable. This is perhaps the first instance of the MHA overruling the state government’s decision to suspend an IPS officer.
Kumar was placed under suspension on June 19 after he was found unauthorisedly absent from work. The government claimed that he had applied for leave only to cover his absence.
Kumar, however, contended that availing of casual leave for six days cannot be construed as absconding from duties. He appealed to the MHA on June 29, stating that he could not attend office from June 12 to 18 due to unavoidable circumstances and had even submitted a leave application.
