MANGALORE: Employees State Insurance (ESI) Hospital Superintendent Gopalakrishna facing a string of charges from sexual harassment to misconduct was suspended for a period of six months.ESI Scheme Directorate (Medical Services) Dr Rahimunisa confirming the news of ESI hospital Superintendent’s suspension revealed that the Labour Secretary had already served the suspension order on Gopalakrishna.It was Express which first highlighted in these columns on how the ESI Hospital Superintendent Gopalakrishna was abusing his powers to inflict sexual and mental harassment on the staff who refused to toe his line.Refusing to stay in his well-furnished quarters, alloted by the government, he had illegally made an ac-fitted septic labour ward in the hospital as his home.Prowling during night time, he would seek sexual gratification by insisting on neck and back massage from nurses on duty.Gopalakrishna has assumed charge as ESI hospital superintendent in 2009.But soon after assuming charge he was accused of using filthy language, strolling in the wards after dusk with a lungi and so on.Responding to the allegatiions, directorate of the hospital visited the hospital and conducted an inquiry.A report with details about the nefarious activities of superintendent was submitted to the labour secretary.Superintendent Gopalakrishna, however, in an interview to Express had denied all the allegations about him and had blamed disgruntled employees on carrying out a smear campaign.With the dismissal of Gopalakrishna, Dr Ashok Kumar will assume charge as the new superintendent.
