KOCHI: Though some passengers use the main portal to enter the Ernakulam North Railway station, some others prefer taking the short cuts.Most of the commuters employed at various places in the city, prefer taking the short cuts so that they can reach the workplace in time and catch the trains back home in time.Many use two short cuts: One towards the north overbridge from the second platform and the other towards the Town Hall.Those who prefer the first one towards Kaloor have to pass through filth and garbage. According to the local traders this is an ideal location for dumping waste. “Many people come during odd hours and dump the waste in the area. This is a daily feature and the open land owned by a private party is full of garbage,” the trader said. There was some respite when a security guard was posted. The plans to demolish the overbridge to facilitate the construction of Kochi Metro resulted in the guard losing his job.He was a help, said the local trader. The path from railway station passes through wild bushes where reptiles lurk. The place is also an ideal location for the anti-social people to carry out their activities.The urchins use of the place to answer nature’s call. Local councilor Gracy Joseph claimed that the area was cleaned only recently. She said that a JCB was used about a month back for the purpose by the contractor after winning the tender. However, she said the people in the area should extend more cooperation. She said that encroachments on the road made it difficult to do the job. She also blamed the owner of the land for not cleaning the wild shrubs despite repeated requests. She said the Corporation has no plans of taking up the cleaning operation as it has been decided to demolish the north overbridge.So the people have to go through the ordeals until the work on the Kochi Metro rail project begins.Meanwhile, police sources said that the police conduct regular rounds day and night.
