Chennai: Chennai’s slums and crowded areas could well look like scenic Budapest in the next few years. After top brass from the State government and the Chennai Corporation undertook a tour of the Hungarian capital, they submitted a report on how to replicate their redevelopment schemes and beautify Singara Chennai. The redevelopment plan will be particularly useful for low density and highly congested areas like the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board tenements and George Town area, suggests their report.
The delegation included the Ministers for housing and urban development minister and transport as well as their respective principal secretaries and the Chennai Corporation Commissioner. They were in Hungary from June 27 to 29. Of particular interest to them was the way Corvin Center, a dangerous and impoverished area 22-acre area was redeveloped into a vibrant, mixed-use project anchored by a modern indoor shopping mall. “It is now the largest on-going development in Hungary with altogether 500,000 sqm newly built area out of which 250,000 sq m is currently under development,” the report stated.
“This sort of development will result in the construction of more tenements for the slum dwellers at the same time make the area less congested and TNSCB, TNHB and CMDA can attempt redevelopment,” the report added. The report also praised Budapest for revitalizing public spaces. “Miles of streets have been redone into vibrant public spaces, including pedestrianized zones where vehicle traffic is restricted,” the report said.
Similarly, various critical spaces in Chennai are likely to be taken up for similar transformation. Places like George Town, Parrys Corner, Mylapore, Anna Nagar, T Nagar and other public spaces can be transformed into iconic locations in Chennai. Also various lakes of Chennai such as the Chetpet and Velachery lakes be taken up for complete transformation into vibrant and green public spaces,” the report added.
