HYDERABAD: Despite the indefinite strike call given by the Singareni Collieries Workers Union (SCWU), there was no major impact on coal production that continued without any obstacles in the mines of Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) on the second day on Tuesday. However, the SCCL management felt the pinch on Monday with coal production falling to 1.53 lakh tonnes against the target of 1.65 lakh tonnes during three shifts of a day. With the SCWU threatening to obstruct the work, the police made elaborate arrangements to prevent any untoward incidents at coal mines in the districts of Adilabad, Karimnagar, Warangal and Khammam. Except for members of All-India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), workers of other unions reported for duty. The strategy of the SCCL management to relieve the night shift workers only after the morning shift workers reported for duty, paid off with the number of workers who attended work increasing from 16,911 on Monday to 22,582 on Tuesday.Meanwhile, the SCWU members raised slogans against the management and burnt the effigies of the management and other unions opposing the strike. In a release, the SCCL management asked the striking workers to consider its proposal for another rounds of talks to resolve the issue but there was no response from the workers union. It may be recalled that the SCWU which is a recognised union of the company and is affiliated to AITUC, gave the strike call from June 20 demanding implementation of its 47-point charter of demands. The management said the coal production continued in 14 open cast mines and 36 underground mines, while coal supply was unhindered in nine coal handling plants.
