Circle inspectors (CIs) in Guntur range of the state police are engaged in a frantic game of musical chairs after allegations of bribery surfaced over the transfer of 44 CIs in one go in the dead of night on August 24.
Alarmed by allegations that some of the transferees paid bribes to secure juicy postings, director-general of police V Dinesh Reddy ordered a high-level probe and rescinded the transfers.
Consequently circle inspectors in Guntur range are going round in circles -- some taking up new postings unknowing of the latest development and some going back to where they came from.
Director-general (law and order) S A Huda and IGP north coastal zone K V Rajendranath Reddy have been asked to go to Guntur next week (Sept 3) to probe the allegations.
The transfer orders were issued on August 24 by Guntur range inspector- general H K Gupta shifting 44 CIs working in Guntur Rural, Guntur Urban, Prakasam and Nellore police precincts.
The orders were served late in the night and the transferred CIs were asked to take charge of their new posts in double quick time.
Rumours and innuendo rose thick and fast from the mass transfers.
A few CIs who were left out of the exercise complained to the DGP that they deserved to be transferred as they had put in long stints in their present posts.
There were also allegations that some CIs were not disturbed because they had political backing.
The top brass in Hyderabad did a close perusal of the transfer list on August 25 and found that the allegations may not be completely baseless.
Fresh orders were issued cancelling the transfers.
Meanwhile, Gupta rushed to Hyderabad Monday night and is understood to have met Dinesh Reddy.
Efforts by Express to reach him proved futile.
The DGP’s office said an open enquiry into the allegations would be conducted at the IG’s office at Guntur on Sept.
3 and at the offices of the SPs of Ongole and Nellore on September 4 and 5 respectively.
“Anyone who has anything to say in this regard may approach the committee.
The details will be kept confidential,’’ the DGP’s office said.
