New Delhi: Eight regional parties on Wednesday dropped a broad hint that they will support the candidature of Bhairon Singh Shekhawat in the Presidential polls if he happens to join the race as an independent candidate.
The parties, which met in Hyderabad on Wednesday to discuss their strategy for the Presidential election, held a threadbare discussion on the Presidential election, but the meeting ended without any decision on the issue.
There was, however, a broad hint that they will support an independent candidate in the race for Rashtrapati Bhawan.
It is likely that the new front will throw its weight behind Bhairon Singh Shekhawat if he happens to join the race as an independent candidate.
The parties have also decided to form a new front, which will be a non-Congress, non-BJP alliance.
The parties, which took part in the meet, included the TDP, Samajwadi Party, AIADMK, NDMK, Jharkhand Vikas Morcha, Asom Gana Parishad, Kerala Congress and the Indian National Lok Dal.
Senior regional leaders like Jayalalitha, Chandrababu Naidu, SP's Mulayam Singh Yadav and others attended the meet.
The regional leaders came down heavily on the UPA Government policies and claimed that they were forming a Third Front as a viable alternative to the BJP-led front and the Congress-led front.
The coming together of these parties has also led to speculation about possible revival of the Third Front. The regional leaders will meet again in Chennai shortly to finalise their strategy for the presidential polls.
