After the consecutive power grid failures in the northern part of the country, the Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) on Wedneday said that the Southern Grid is safe from any risk of failures or trips.
In an official statement, the KPCL said, “As many lines had tripped during the major grid collapse in northern India, special review meetings were convened both in the Government under the Chairmanship of Energy Minister Shobha Karandlaje and also at Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) to take further steps necessary to prevent such happenings.”
It added that the Southern Grid, which provides power to most parts of southern India, adheres to the correct procedures to avoid a North India-like situation. “Generally, when the grid is under healthy condition the frequency will be around 50HZ. When there is a problem in the system, the frequency starts dropping and the special protection scheme which had been installed in southern grid, more specially in Karnataka in a systematic manner comes into action. When frequency collapses beyond a set point, the special protection automatically trips required set quantum of load and avoids further frequency collapse.”
According to KPCL, the Southern Grid lost 1,500MW in a sudden when Kolar-Talcher line, which was having 1500MW line flow, had tripped at 1.02pm on July 31 when grid collapse occurred in Northern states. For Karnataka about 350MW was affected during this period. “Loosing 1,500MW suddenly has not affected southern grid because of the good grid discipline. The under frequency relays provided to act when frequency starts falling beyond set point acted promptly and avoided further collapse. This is implemented in three stages,” the KPCL stated.
