Indore mayor Malini Gaur has announced that post-December 25, any person found spitting paan, gutkha or paan masala would have to pay a fine of Rs 500, along with their names being aired on radio.

Indore: The cleanest city in India, according to the 2016 Swachhta Survey, is leaving no stone unturned to keep its tag intact. As part of efforts, the city civic body has announced a plan to penalise those spitting in public places and also shame them by airing their names on the radio.

Indore mayor Malini Gaur has announced that post-December 25, any person found spitting paan, gutkha or paan masala would have to pay a fine of Rs 500, along with their names being aired on radio.

The mayor claimed that as those addicted to these stimulants cannot stop, the administration had to come up with innovative ways to push the addicts to carry their spittoons with them.

“We urge everyone to shun paan and gutkha. These things are injurious to health,” said Gaur.

The collectorate and government departments have also formed Swachhta Samitis to keep track of cleanliness in government offices.

The city had earned plaudits after it was adjudged the cleanest city in India after the Centre’s Swachhta Survey 2016. The city now yearns to keep the tag intact as the nation gears up for Swachhta Survey 2018 – a key initiative under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pet Swachh Bharat Abhiyan project.
