KANGHEEPURAM: Most of the Ape Piaggio autos here did not ply on Friday, as operators protested against non-implementation of an agreement reached between them and the Tata Magic operators on June 24.As per the agreement, signed in the presence of RDO Dr Veerappan and DSP K Rajendhran, 13 designated spots in the outskirts of Kancheepuram would be earmarked for the Tata Magic autos to operate from and to park a total of 120 vehicles. It was also resolved that both groups should not operate as 'stage carriages,' but only as 'contract carriages.' As the agreement was effective June 27, its operation would be reviewed after two months. However, CITU's district secretary E Muthukumar, also the 'honorary' leader of various auto unions here charged that the Tata Magic operators violated all the tenets of the agreement. He alleged that the police also remained mute spectators to this. But, according to DSP Rajendran, as many as eight Tata Magic vehicles were booked and fined up to Rs 2,000 each for violating the agreement. Muthukumar also met collector Sivashanmuga Raja to inform him that the operators would be striking work on Friday as about 2000 families were affected due to the 'misbehavior' of the Tata Magic operators.Meanwhile, SP Manoharan told Express that from Saturday onwards, the June 24 agreement would be strictly implemented, and violators would be brought to book. This stand would mean that the Ape Piaggio vehicles should not ferry more than four passengers including the driver at a time, while the Tata Magic vehicles should not park at spots that are not allocated to them.
