Srinagar: A CRPF jawan was killed and two others were injured when terrorists opened fire at a CRPF van near a school in Pantha Chowk, Srinagar, on Saturday.
IG CRPF, Ravideep Sahi, said there were two or three militants involved in the attack. “A sub-inspector was killed and one was injured. There are reports that a second jawan has also been injured," he said.
Sources said the terrorists fled after opening fire and are holed up in a school in the area. The forces have surrounded the school and cordoned off the area. There are reports of intermittent firing. Sahi said it was not a fidayeen attack.
The terrorists fired indiscriminately towards the CRPF vehicle.
The deceased has been identified as sub-inspector Sahib Shukla and the injured as constable-driver Nissar Ahmed, officials said. The CRPF personnel, part of road opening deployment, were sitting inside their vehicle at Pantha chowk bypass along the Srinagar-Jammu national highway when, around 5:50 pm, militants carried out the attack.
In the melee, a constable of Jammu and Kashmir Police was injured in the foot when his rifle went off accidentally, officials said.
Reinforcements have been rushed to the area to track down the militants and the entire area has been cordoned off, the officials said. The Srinagar-Jammu national highway has also been closed.
Sub-inspector Sahab Shukla was rushed to hospital after sustaining bullet wounds, but he succumbed to his injuries. Sources said Lashkar-e-Taiba has claimed responsibility for the attack.
