The Legal Aid Clinic, which was started by the Prison Department in association with the Kerala State Legal Services Authority, was launched at the Ernakulam District Prison, Thrikkakara, on Saturday.
Speaking after the inauguration, Kerala High Court Judge Justice C N Ramachandran Nair said that the government should initiate steps for the welfare of the family members of prisoners.
According to Justice Ramachandran Nair, convicts are often the bread-winners in their respective families. Their absence would compound the financial burden on their family members. “The government receives substantial financial contribution from vocational programmes such as chapatti and curry businesses. Apart from using the fund for jail work, the government should allot an amount for the prisoners’ family members as part of the welfare programme,” he said.
He pointed out that legal aid is the constitutional right of every prisoner. “The Legal Aid Clinic’s volunteers will be at the service of prisoners at any time. Legal help will be provided free of cost. With the permission of the jailors, a prisoner can call on the volunteers and seek advice regarding the case,” he said.
He condemned those who take quotations to attack or kill others. “They have turned killing into a profession, and politicians use them. Society must boycott such people,” he said.
Benny Behanan MLA, District Collector Sheik Pareeth and jail superintendent B Sunil Kumar spoke on the occasion.
Later, a one-day Ayurvedic check-up was held for the inmates.w
