KOCHI: For lovers of classics and world cinema, Don Bosco IMAGE Saturday Movie Club, near EMC has indeed turned out to be a special venue. The club that brings to Kochiites great cinema every Saturday was started with the intention of creating a platform for film lovers to see, discuss and learn about classic movies around the world. Film buffs can be seen coming together every Saturday at 6.30 pm for previews and discussions. The club has designed an ultra modern HD (High Definition) theatre with full HD Projection and Audio System like we see at multiplexes.“The club aims to encourage and promote the study of cinema through serious viewing of movies and discussions, as well as to make the members more cued into the technical and creative side of films,” says Fr Jiji Kalavanal, director of Don Bosco IMAGE. On every Thursday, the members receive a small synopsis of the movie to be shown on Saturday, along with other details of the director and cast. “By doing this the members are made aware of the movie beforehand and can analyse the movie even better,” says Shino Varghese, staff coordinator of the club. During every screening,  there is an introduction to the movie and it concludes with a floor discussion. “The post-movie talk mainly consists of dissecting a film for its good and bad points,” says Fr Jiji. The club that was started a year back has showcased 40 films since then. The club included English, Italian, German, Chinese and many other foreign language films in its first year. “Knowledge combined with entertainment is what is valuable about the club. I got the opportunity to watch good movies here,” says E M Joseph, MD Bosco Décor. Saturday Movie Club has a well equipped HD projection theatre and a fully air conditioned gallery style setting with 71 executive seats. “It is a platform for us to get to know more about a movie, director and other technical aspects. Apart from that the ambience inside the theatre is great, even better than multiplexes,” says Sasikumar U V, MD, K-Force. There is lot of variety in the films. I liked Clint Eastwood's 'Million Dollar Baby', Spanish dramatic comedy 'Volver' and the like, adds Sasikumar. All the movies screened are blu-ray movies. “Blu-ray discs are high in quality with regards to audio-visual treatment,” says Fr Jiji. “It is hard to get blu-ray disc of these movies, so we ask our friends and other contacts to buy disc from abroad.” These movie discs usually cost Rs 1400-1600. Now the club has almost 800 movies in their collection. The club has successfully completed its first year. “This year we will be including more vintage classics along with contemporary classics,” says Jiji. The selection of movies is done by looking at their international ratings on websites like rottentomatoes, IMDB and the like. Fr Jiji says “Only films with a rating of above eight out of ten are selected,” The second year premier will start from December first week.
