New Delhi: The legendary Sony Walkman is making a comeback in the land where it first revolutionised music listening 35 years ago.

Sony had stopped manufacturing the classic, cassette tape Walkman on October 25, 2010 but now the device in a more modern-day avatar is selling well in Japan, reports the Wall Street Journal.

The Sony Walkman ZX1 sells at a price that matches that of the high-end flagship phones by leading mobile phone makers. At 71,130 yen (Rs 42,000 approximately) the ZX1 is aimed at premium buyers.

Encased in a block of aluminium, that Sony says helps reduce noise, the ZX1 weighs 139g and has a large storage capacity of 128GB. The ample storage is also necessitated because the device supports high-resolution audio that Sony claims offers better sound quality than CDs but requires more storage space than the popular MP3 format.

The ZX1 has a 4.0-inch, TFT colour LCD WVGA (854x480) display and runs on Android 4.1. It claims a 32 hour playback time. Unlike today's smartphones, the Sony Walkman ZX1 doesn't flaunt a slim frame and measures 15.3 mm at its thickest part.

"I think this one is the best Walkman in its history," the WSJ story quotes a 19-year-old university student Tento Koyama.

The Sony Walkman ZX1 hit Japanese stores in December and was sold out soon. Sony is now selling the device in Europe and some Asian countries.
