KOCHI: Miss this now, and you might have to wait for seven years to see another total lunar eclipse. Breakthrough Science Society is all set to display this year's second total lunar eclipse for the public at the Marine Drive Rainbow Bridge on December 10. There will be interaction sessions in connection with this on the same day.“It will be a wonderful opportunity for the sky-lovers and amateurs in the city to witness the 51-minute celestial event. The moon will start getting under the earth's shadow at around 6.15 pm. The total eclipse will continue till 8.28 pm, making it a total eclipse of 51 minutes," Breakthrough Science Society District Chapter coordinator Francis Kalathungal said. The total eclipse will begin from 7.36 pm and will last till 8.28 pm and it will end around 9.48 pm, he said.A lunar eclipse occurs when the earth's shadow falls on the moon. This can only happen on a full moon night when the sun is on one side of the earth and the moon on the opposite side. If these three celestial bodies get aligned in a straight line on a single plane, a lunar eclipse occurs. It will be visible from Asia and Australia, but not South America or Antarctica. Observers throughout Europe and Africa will miss the early eclipse phases as they occur before moonrise. The lunar eclipse which the country viewed last time was also a total one on June 15, 2011. The next total lunar eclipse visible in its entirety from the country will only be after another seven years on July 27, 2018. Though there will be another total lunar eclipse on January 31, 2018, which the nation may not be able to view in its entirety, he said.
