MANGALORE: Three lives were snuffed out after they drowned in the Netravati river at Nandavar in Panemangalore, near here, on Tuesday. The deceased have been identified as Jithesh, 17, and his brother Lakshmeesh, 20 — both residents of Nandavar in Mangalore.Their relative Yashodhar, 20, of Kadaba was also one of the victims. Jithesh was a PUC student of Vivekananda College in Puttur. Lakshmeesh was an ITI student in Sunkadakatte and Yashodar was a student of the Mangalore University. Sources at Bantwal police station said that since Tuesday was a general holiday on account of Muharram, the trio along with one Ranjith ventured into the river Netravati. It is said that when they stepped into the water, the flow of the river was usual. But suddenly, the water level increased and the three of them drowned in it. Ranjith’s efforts to rescue them were futile. Bodies of all the three were recovered. Locals alleged that the sudden rise in the water level was due to release of water from the AMR Power Project, which is located in Shambur village. In 2009, four children had drowned because of a similar reason.    Later, strict guidelines were issued to AMR power project for releasing water.     Normally, AMR project while releasing the water, alarms the public through a siren. Whether the AMR authorities released water after the siren sounded is yet to be ascertained. When contacted, Bantwal City Police Sub Inspector Shekhar told Express, “The locals feel that the sudden rise in the water level caused the deaths and AMR power project should be held responsible for it. It will be investigated.” A case has been registered  by Bantwal city police and an investigation has been launched into the incident of the three deaths.
