New Delhi: Fearing the fast blurring distinction between a picnic place and an academic institution, a college in Aligarh has banned taking selfies on campus.
The administration of DS College, Aligarh, in a notice put up early this week, said that “the use of mobile phone is banned".
College Principal, Dr Prakash Varshney, said, “It is a very unusual activity on campus. We only see students with earphones plugged in for hours, indulging in long conversation and taking selfies as if there is a function here. Now with the ban on smartphones usage, we can control that. It is a good step for disciplining the students in a college.”
The notice says that students are expected to use the phones in assigned corners - common room for boys and girls. They were also advised to make only emergency calls and finish the call promptly. Students were ticked off against wearing earphones and clicking selfies.
Renu Singhal, acting proctor of the college, told News 18.com, “The academic culture has been destroyed because of the mobile phones. All that students do is come and click selfies as if in a perpetual state of picnicking. All this frenzy is understandable when there is a cultural program on campus but to see this daily is making it difficult to bring in a seriousness on campus.”
The DS College in has 8000 students. Singhal is unable to understand why so much time is spent over the smartphone. "Even in the class, their phones ring every now and then. We had to come with this notice," said Singhal.
In an unusual practice, the Singhal was seen standing at the gate and checking if the students had their mobile phones switched on while entering the campus.
The students though feel it is unfair as many of them travel from distant areas and it is absolutely necessary for them to have their phones in working mode.
