New Delhi: A court in Togo on Monday is expected to take a decision on whether jailed Indian sailor Captain Sunil James will be allowed to visit home for his child's cremation or not. The Ministry of External Affairs officials have said that they are hopeful that James will be freed.
James's family is mourning the death of his 11-month-old son, who died of septicemia. The baby's funeral has been put on hold in the hope that he will be freed from jail to perform the last rites of his only child.
It's been four months since James and the crew of the ship MT Centurion were arrested by Togo officials. He had stopped at Togo to report an attack on his ship by pirates when he and his crew members were arrested on false charges of aiding the pirates. However, those charges were dropped but they are now accused of complicity in theft.
Earlier, the External Affairs Ministry has now said that they have been granted consular access to meet James and two other jailed sailors.
