KOCHI: A 42yearold elephant, which was suffering from serious injuries, died at Choondi near Muvattupuzha on Monday.
The Forest Department has started looking into the circumstances that led to the death of the animal. Officials said the elephant died near Pariyaram Mahavishnu Temple where it was camped for the past few days.

The mahout of the elephant Viswanathan also stayed near the temple.

The officials said the elephant was seriously injured after some mahouts tried to forcibly control the animal when it experienced musth two months ago.

Meanwhile, Venkitachalam of the Elephant Lovers Forum, Thrissur, said the animal was brutally attacked by the mahouts during the musth period which in turn led to the death of the animal.
