NEW DELHI: The Centre on Wednesday summoned Pakistan High Commissioner to India Abdul Basit and issued a demarche demanding Islamabad stop supporting and sponsoring terrorism against India.
Foreign Secretary Jaishankar called in the Pakistan High Commissioner to South Block even as a high-level meeting was taking place at the Prime Minister’s residence to discuss the Uri attacks. Union ministers Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley, Sushma Swaraj, Manohar Parrikar and Nitin Gadkari attended the meeting convened by PM Narendra Modi.
"The persistent and growing violation of this undertaking is a matter of very serious concern," said an MEA release.
"The latest terrorist attack in Uri only underlines that the infrastructure of terrorism in Pakistan remains active. We demand that Pakistan lives up to its public commitment to refrain from supporting and sponsoring terrorism against India," it said.
Pakistan, however, rejected India’s claims as “baseless”. A High Commission source said it was a routine demarche.
We were given some material on Uri. Pakistan rejects these baseless claims. India needs to come back to the negotiating table on Kashmir. And stop this anti-Pak propaganda," he said.
New Delhi had categorically informed Pakistan that in the recent incidents involving cross-border terrorism including Uri and Pathankot attacks, India had recovered a number of items that include GPS with coordinates that indicate the point and time of infiltration across the LoC and the subsequent route to the terror attack site, grenades with Pakistani markings, communication matrix sheets, communication equipment; and other stores made in Pakistan, including food, medicines and clothes.
India has also said that if the Government of Pakistan wishes to investigate these cross-border attacks, India is ready to provide finger prints and DNA samples of terrorists killed in the Uri and Poonch incidents.
"We now expect a response from the Government of Pakistan," the MEA release said.
