Forty-seven-year old Lesli George Thomas, a native of San Francisco had flown to Frankfurt from Los Angeles to take the Lufthansa flight to Chennai.
Thomas had left one baggage on his arrival at Chennai airport Sunday night as he could not pay the customs duty.
He had said that he would come back on Monday to pay the duty and clear the baggage but during scanning, the baggage was found to contain a rifle and 200 cartridges.
When the man came to clear the baggage on Monday morning, he was detained for questioning and officials said Thomas was making contradictory statements during the interrogation.
Initially, he claimed that he had brought the rifle and cartridges for the Rifle Club here but later claimed the baggage was not his at all.
The officials wondered how the baggage had gone unnoticed by the airport officials at Frankfurt.
