At a time when the political circles are rife with rumours about V B Cheriyan’s comeback to the CPM, a closed-door meeting between Cheriyan and CPM state committee member K Chandran Pillai here, has raised many eyebrows.

Even though both Cheriyan and Chandran Pillai stated that it was a mere discussion on trad union issues, sources point out that there is more to it than meets the eye.

It was on Monday that the two leaders had a one-to-one meeting, after the trade union discussions at the Cochin Shipyard (CSL).  The duo have been heading two major unions - Shipyard Employees Union and Federation - at the CSL.

“The leaders have not associated with each other for the last 17 years, after Cheriyan’s  expulsion from the party when A P Varkey was the CPM district secretary. Hence the meeting on Monday assumes special significance.

It could be an attempt by the Achuthanandan faction to ensure that Cheriyan will stand by them, if he makes a comeback,” sources opined.

In the last few weeks, there has been widespread rumours about the former CITU leader’s comeback to the party.

CPM mouthpiece Desabhimani recently publishing an article by Cheriyan has been perceived as part of the CPM’s strategy to take back the ousted leader.

However, Cheriyan termed the meeting as part of the discussions to find solutions to the issues being faced by the trade unions.

“The trade unions at CSL have been raising various demands for the welfare of employees. All the trade unions are standing together for sorting out the employees’ issues. The talks have been part of these attempts,” said Cheriyan, laying the rumours to naught.

Chandran Pillai, who is currently leading the CPM campaign in the district, also denied reports that the closed-door meeting was related to Cheriyan’s come back to the party.
