THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: More than 300 ex-servicemen and their families attended a get-together of veterans of one of India’s oldest infantry regiments here on Saturday. The Madras Regiment Ex-Servicemen Welfare Association, which organised the event at the Pangode Military Station, said it was planning to involve itself in social activities across the state. “The retired men from the Madras Regiment should number around one lakh. Every year, around 2,000 people retire. We plan to open various social welfare schemes after studying the possibilities in each district,” association convener Capt (Retd) C R S Menon said.Among other things, the association has plans to open old age homes for ex-servicemen. The association also reiterated the demand that at least one Rajya Sabha MP nominee from the state should be an ex-serviceman. “There are around 80 lakh ex-servicemen across the country. This has been our long-standing demand. We have again approached Defence Minister A K Antony,” he said.One of the oldest infantry regiments in the Indian Army, the Madras Regiment celebrated its 250th anniversary in 2009. The Madras Regiment Ex-servicemen Welfare Association was formed two years ago with the intention of bringing the retired personnel from this regiment under one umbrella.Pangode Military Station commander Brigadier Pradeep Narayanan, association chief patron Brigadier (Retd) P V Sahadevan, retired and serving army men and their families attended the function.
