Marking the launch of Vision 2030 project of the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA), a two-day seminar was kick-started here on Thursday. The project aims to develop the city to the status of a metro. The seminar discusses every developmental activity and infrastructure requirements for the city with a far-sighted vision for 2030.
Experienced town planners, engineers and representatives of various political parties attended the seminar. Inaugurating the seminar, Speaker G Karthikeyan said that the seminar should concentrate on the development of major elements of town planning like transport, IT, tourism, drinking water, industry, water logging, solid waste management, disaster management and environment protection. “The efforts of the business fraternity to nurture a development culture should be encouraged,” Karthikeyan added. A majority of the participants raised the opinion to form a Metropolitan Planning Authority to plan the suitable strategic and scientific projects for the city. “Kochi is a city with the potential to attain a similar growth pattern of Mumbai. For this, along with economic growth, we should concentrate on the development of basic infrastructure facilities, including road, rail and water transport,” said former Union Minister S Krishnakumar. Regarding financial stability, he said that the city should try to attract investments worth `25,000 crore in the next 10 years.
Experts also said that a separate section to integrate the financial sources should be formed at the GCDA.
“A land bank should be formed to properly tap the revenue generated from the GCDA land in various parts of the city. Private participation should be encouraged and priority should be given for projects under the public-private-partnership mode,” they said. The workshop will conclude on Friday.
