THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: From Tuesday, the Kudumbashree Cleanwell units would resume waste collection. But, this time, with a difference. The women will not collect waste from those households which have enough land to dig a pit or landfill garbage. Plastic will be a strict no-no. Hotels, houses with not an inch of space and flats would be given preference. The waste collected would be taken to the 22 spots which have been identified by the Corporation for landfilling. On Monday, five zonal meetings were held to discuss the action plan, chaired by various Chairpersons. It was decided that big lorries would not be put to use. The mini-vans which were used by the Kudumbashree units would be used to transport waste to the identified spots. Though minor complaints have come up regarding many spots, the Corporation is not expecting a big issue. However, it is not a permanent solution, confess the Corporation officials. Meanwhile, the Suchitwa Mission has offered all help to citizens for setting up waste management mechanisms in their houses. Flats, residents’ associations, market associations, shop and establishments and wedding auditoriums can approach the Mission for help. ‘’Initially, it would be technical know-how. But, maybe, at a later stage, we might be able to give financial help too,’’ said an official with the Suchitwa Mission. The Mission is also planning to hold demonstrations of alternative methods at ward-level with the help of residents’ associations so that the public can choose the option that suits them best. For help, citizens can register with Suchitwa Mission, LSG Department, Panavila Junction, Thycaud PO, Thiruvananthapuram-14. Or e-mail to [email protected]. The registration must be done before December 31.
