Malda: A Railway Protection Force personnel was killed and three others were injured after a scuffle broke out with angry hawkers in West Bengal's Malda district on Monday. The fight ensued after a RPF team barred a hawker from selling items at the entrance of the station but as the hawker protested the personnel beat him up, the police said.
Following this, a large group of hawkers barged into the office of RPF located near the station and started brickbatting, prompting a panicked RPF soldier to fire from his rifle, they said.
The angry hawkers then threw a barrage of stones at the victim, identified as S Samanta, killing him on the spot.
As huge tension prevailed in and around the station, a team of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) was deployed in the station and its surrounding area. A contingent of the Government Railway Police (GRP) was also stationed.
