New Delhi: Iran's nuclear programme comes up for discussion at the IAEA board meet in 5 days.
But for the UPA government, the political battle lines have already been drawn in New Delhi.
The Left allies want the Government to clarify its position at the UPA-Left co-ordination committee meet on Monday.
Here are the possible situations and India's options when it comes to them.
SCENARIO I
The best case for India will be the 'no vote' scenario. This is what India will be looking forward to and has welcomed the Russian mediation favouring the same.
And with Iran reportedly co-operating, situation might just come to a point where a compromise can be worked out.
Also, since Bush is facing the heat on Iraq troop-withdrawl issue, it is unlikely that the new IAEA members will support US when it comes to voting on Iran.
SCENARIO II
If push comes to shove, India likely to vote against Iran.
Sources in the UPA reveal that India's stance is unlikely to change.
India has always maintained that it doesn't want a nuclear Iran.
Sources also reveal that India will not want to jeopardise the Indo-US nuclear deal by taking any anti-US stand.
WHAT ABOUT LEFT PRESSURE?
Sources reveal that despite the threats and warnings, Left will not press a vote in the Parliament and will be told to back off.
Hence, the UPA government seems to have an action plan ready for all the possible scenarios.
