New Delhi: Is it me or is anyone else also feeling a bit let down by the first promo of 'Kochadaiiyaan'? The much hyped magnum opus featuring superstar Rajinikanth seems a distant cry from the usual blockbusters that the actor is associated with.
Sure, the trailer promises the film to be larger than life, with mind numbing, awe aspiring stunts in it, but there is this constant feeling at the back of your head that that's not really Rajinikanth or even his body double performing those stunts. But an animated figure created on a computer screen, which just bears slight resemblance to the actor.
Three years post his last outing in 'Robot', Rajinikanth makes a comeback in a feature film which tries a new concept on screen called motion capture and is basically an animation film where the leads look like caricatures of the actors, not really them.
Pardon my ignorance, but if the makers are touting 'Kochadaiiyaan' as a Rajinikanth film, shouldn't it have the actor acting in it? What we got to see on the trailer was an animation figure who looked mildly like Rajini doing sword fight in a very graphic battleground where everything looks seemingly digital and far from reality. And don't even get me started on how they have made Deepika Padukone and Shobana look in the film. Both actresses, known to be conventional Indian beauties, look like video game characters in the trailer. Even Kangana's leap of faith cum somersault jump from a high rise in 'Krissh 3' looked more believable than this.
What baffles me time and again is the actor's need to look younger and leaner onscreen with each passing year. We all know he is in the other side of sixty, but 'Kochaidaiiyaan' has him, or rather his caricature, playing a 'prince' and romancing Deepika. Clearly an actor of his stature can play roles best suited to his age now.
So will this film finally burst the huge bubble around the enigma called Rajinikanth? Or is the 3D animation feature a clever ploy to hide the limitations of an aging superstar?
