New Delhi: Probably Rohit Shetty's 'Zameen' was the first film where Abhishek Bachchan's distinct masculine style was noticed by the audiences. 'Dhoom', 'Dus', 'Bluffmaster', and 'Dum Maro Dum' consolidated his image further. The promos of 'Players' suggest that Abhishek is again going to flaunt the same ultra male attitude in the film.
Although the makers have denied any resemblance with 'Dhoom' but the appearance of the film hints something different.
It's the official remake of 'The Italian Job' which means that a major part of the film will showcase chase sequences. The director duo of Abbas-Mustan is also expected to give the film their special touch. Last some years have not been very productive for the acclaimed directors. Last seven years have produced just one hit 'Race' for them. '36 China Town' and 'Naqaab' were duds at the box office despite huge publicity drives. Thus they are expected to return with the formula used in 'Race'. That is, a big star cast and a fast paced screenplay. Abbas-Mustan tend to cover the flawed script with a racy screenplay which creates space for style.
The idea of Indian thrillers mainly revolves around stylish imageries with the actual concept taking the backstage. Be it 'Karz', 'Kasoor' or 'Aankhen', Bollywood films have chiefly focussed on actors’ mannerism than the core issue of theft or murder.
However there are films like 'Kaun', 'Being Cyrus', 'Ek Hasina Thi' and 'Manorama Six Feet Under', where the content ruled but these films were character centric. 'Manorama Six Feet Under' can qualify as a proper plot centric thriller film but Players' plot was known even before the shooting started. So it was natural for the makers to go for the style.
Now come to Abhishek Bachchan again. He can't boast of many good roles in his career of over fifty films in just ten years. One 'Yuva' or one 'Sarkar' doesn't make the average even one good role a year. But he needs to cultivate an image in order to survive. That image can't come from 'Guru' or 'Sarkar' as the director also matters.
It might be easy for Manirathnam and Ram Gopal Varma to shape up Abhishek's character in their films but other directors may not be as gutsy as them to keep experimenting all the time. They are likely to go for mainstream Bollywood films which will invariably feature Abhishek as a stylish and quick-witted chap.
It's just natural for the actor to mix up 'Dhoom' and 'Sarkar' together to create a new image. Therefore, 'Players' may prove to be just another bead in the thread of typical Abhishek Bachchan films.
