Breast Cancer: Signs And Symptoms To Look Out For
According to an American Cancer Society report, the most evident indicator to check for in your breast is a lump or mass. Breast cancer is most commonly characterised by a hard mass with irregular edges, however, some cancers can also cause soft and uncomfortable lumps. However, a lump is not the only indication of breast cancer.
Even if you don’t feel a lump, the report goes on to identify the following symptoms that should be treated seriously.
- Swelling of all or part of the breast
- Skin dimpling
- Discomfort in the breast or nipples
- When the nipple turns inward
- Red, dry, flaky, or thicker skin on the nipples and/or breasts
- Nipple discharge
- Swollen lymph nodes beneath the arm or around the collarbone might also signal disease spread before a tumour in the breast is palpable
It is important to note that not all bumps are malignant. Whatever the case, any changes in your breast should be checked by a doctor.
Breast Cancer: Prevention
One needs to be familiar with the appearance and feel of their breasts to discover any irregularities. According to the aforementioned report, regular breast cancer screening tests are critical because mammograms are not 100 per cent accurate in detecting the disease.
Meanwhile, the Mayo Clinic recommends a few preventive strategies for adopting lifestyle adjustments. This includes:
- Limiting alcohol consumption
- Quitting smoking
- Keeping a healthy weight
- Enjoying an active lifestyle
- Nursing if you’re a mother
- Limiting the usage of hormone medication after menopause.
