Debarun Mukherjee, who completes 10 glorious years in the fashion industry next year speaks to News18.com about the significance of Khadi and his collection Khadi Resplendent.
What have you done to give Khadi a complete different look?
Khadi has always been portrayed as a serious, intellectual and cause-based fabric. I have taken up Khadi to give a glamorous and rich look. Changing colours from pastels and nudes to dark, warm and royal for my collection. Adding Zardozi embroidery and pairing Khadi with silks and rich hand woven fabric.
Are people ready for designers who experiment with the traditional Khadi look?
People or customers in particular are always ready if you give them something new keeping in mind its wearability, comfort and prices range. And if it is beautiful, it will always be appreciated.
Why aren’t too many designers experimenting?
For me experimentation is about giving something different to your clients - something that will have new elements which no one has seen before or bringing few old things together so that they look new and experimental.
Do you think Khadi is still a boring concept to many?
It is all about how you transform a fabric to life and that’s what a designer is trained to do. So the new twist to Khadi is not all boring.
Tell us more about your collection Khadi Resplendent
The revival of Khadi and hand woven fabric has prompted me to do this collection. My idea now is to take Khadi to the next level of luxury pret and high fashion. This collection - Khadi Resplendent - looks at Khadi in a different light. Khadi is here perceived as glamorous and rich fabric. I have taken warm and rich colours to give Khadi a complete different look.
Zardozi embroidery and block prints added that extra element to the collection. I have mixed cotton Khadi with silk and other fabrics. Light bridal to occasional wear is what this collection is all about. It is my ode to all my weaver friends who are so integral part of our fashion world.
